Right Estate Agents report that just under half of buyers said they would knock 20% off a property’s asking price if the outside looked messy.
Having a messy garden could knock a staggering £60,000 off the value of your home.
Just under half of house hunters said they would take £57,600, equivalent to 20%, off a property’s asking price if the outside looked unkempt.
Pest control outside a property was the top gripe, followed by a messy garden and being close to a noisy public building, such as a pub, according to research by Barclays Mortgages.
It seems efforts to spruce up the outside of your home ahead of selling are not wasted, because buyers take just 10 seconds to decide whether they like a property before they step inside.
And a third of people said they would not even bother looking inside a house if they did not like what they saw on the outside.
By contrast, 53% said they would buy a home that needed extensive renovations on the inside, if its exterior was appealing.
Despite the current shortage of homes on the market, it shows that buyers are not prepared to pay over the odds for shabby properties and will bargain hard with the owners if they do not like what they see.
When asked what their top external property features were, 69% of people said a well-manicured garden, while 60% preferred double glazing and 50% cited a parking space.
Other popular features included hanging baskets, flower pots and a neat lawn.
But curb appeal does not end with your own home, with just over half of people also saying they liked neighbours’ properties to look well cared for and have nice gardens.
When it comes to the nation’s favourite property type, 36% of buyers plump for a new-build home. Other popular styles include Victorian houses (29%) and Georgian homes (27%). But uninspiring 80s homes and Mock Tudor properties are at the bottom of the pile.
